M&S accelerates store closure programme

Marks & Spencer has announced the next tranche of UK stores proposed for closure or set to close as it reshapes its UK store estate in line with its target to take at least a third of sales online.  M&S now plans to close over 100 stores in total by 2022, including 21 that have already closed and the 14 stores that are announced today. DFS Furniture has announced that Ian Filby will be retiring as CEO after eight years with the group, and will be succeeded by Tim Stacey, currently group COO.  Ian will step down as CEO and from the board of directors on the 31st October, and Tim will take over on 1st November following a six-month handover period. NBF introduces random product inspections

The National Bed Federation (NBF) is stepping up its due diligence with the introduction of a random testing programme of both member and non-member products. The Due Diligence Testing Programme has been developed by the NBF to strengthen its Code of Practice after conducting a pilot exercise earlier this year. Starting this month, up to 50 mattresses, bases and headboards annually will be purchased on the open market and put through their paces against the criteria of the NBF Code of Practice....

Ikea has appointed Javier Quiñones as country retail manager to run its UK and Ireland business. Previously deputy retail manager, UK and Ireland, for three years, Javier will take over the role on 1st June from Gillian Drakeford, who is joining worldwide franchiser Inter Ikea Systems to lead the development of the retail system....


Silentnight hosts bed speed dating event

Research by bed manufacturer Silentnight into mattress buying habits has revealed that a quarter of Britons get less than five hours sleep a night – and while the survey showed the nation might not be inclined to actually invest in a new mattress, 39% concede that a new mattress would give them a better night’s sleep....
